BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Culture has recommended ten cyber games that are suitable for minors to play as part of its drive to purify the on-line environment for the young.

The ten cyber games published have been selected by the ministry's on-line games censorship committee from scores of games recommended by the Chinese public.

The games are all domestic products. They include five role playing games (RPG), four recreation and chess games (Chess, Xiangqi, Weiqi), and one educational game, such as "Warring States II Online,""Rainbow Island Online," and "Wonderlands of learning and games."

These games have made their way into the final recommendation list because they are deemed "healthy" and can "enhance intelligence," according to the ministry.

The ministry hoped the list could serve as a guidance for parents to better direct their children in the winter vacation, which usually lasts nearly two months from January to February each year.

This was the third time for the ministry to publish recommendedcyber games list. The previous two were made public respectively in January 2006 and August 2005 with a total of 25 games enlisted.

In the past few years, on-line games have become the favorite pastime of young people. However, it is argued that such social problems as game addiction, juvenile delinquency and the advocacy of brutality and perversion among minors by on-line violence and pornography have stemmed from an inadequately regulated Internet.

TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL CLUB THRIVING: "In the first meeting alone we matched the record attendance of last year," reports 16-year-old Kris Taylor, President of the Jasper High School Go Club in Plano, Texas. "We had about 30 people for our first meeting, which was just elections and rules and stuff. I had to leave early so when I did, a sophomore member from last year took over and began to teach the beginners some basics. Even the teacher started learning this year!" Taylor launched his high school go club last year with AGF support, and his school fielded two teams in last year's Ing School Teams Championship. Already an active organizer in the 10th grade, Taylor has a website for his club, and has made a series of Go videos on Youtube, including one on how to care for Yunzi go stones. The club meets after school in social studies teacher Jeff Koch's room. Koch, a non-player until this semester, told the Journal: "I've been most impressed by the more-experienced club members' drive to promote the game to new players; teaching them not only a fun game, but forcing them to stretch analytical skills that they might not otherwise use in their daily lives."

PRINCETON TROUNCES RUTGERS IN FIRST-EVER INTER-COLLEGIATE MATCH: Longtime rivals Princeton and Rutgers now have another field of competition. Princeton prevailed, 20 games to 7, when the two Ivy League schools squared off yesterday in what may have been the first-ever face-to-face intercollegiate go team match in the United States. The format, devised by Rob Muldowney of Rutgers, divides 9 players per side by strength into 3 flights of 3, using a round robin within each flight for a total of 27 games. The format rewards depth as well as strong top players. Players must be current students, graduate or undergraduate. The Princeton team dominated the top flight with Zhaonian (Michael) Chen 7d backed up by Calvin Lee 5d and Zi Chen 2d winning seven out of a possible 9 games. The Rutgers team was led by Eric Lin 4d and Kevin Kim 2d. Kim won the final game of the match, a long, close-fought battle against Zi Chen. Both players finished with less than 2 minutes on their clocks, which used Fischer timing, 30 min reserve and 15 seconds per move. Rutgers eked out a win in the bottom flight, 5 games to 4, but Princeton's strong middle flight of all low-single-digit kyu players swept all 9 games against their less experienced Rutgers opponents. Metacognition – thinking about thinking – is vital in Go, so I got the children to start thinking about how they were thinking during a game about various challenges facing them.

For example, the status of groups – ie which groups were unconditionally "alive"? Which were dead? Which indeterminate?

Go also has rules of etiquette. Players introduce themselves and say: "Enjoy the game" before they begin, and shake hands saying: "Thank you for the game" at the end.

Boris: Four years ago I taught Boris to play, initially as a home tuition pupil. He became Youth Grand Prix champion in 2002 and retained the title in 2003, so is the current holder. He was British under-16 champion last year and runner-up this year. He has become a well-balanced, friendly, personable young man.

Arthur: After learning for only a few months he took part in the British Youth Championships in February, along with Boris. He won three games out of five, playing mostly against much more experienced opponents.

He also won the Go quiz, a series of problems of increasing complexity. He clearly had a very enjoyable time with Boris and the other youngsters. He has now successfully reintegrated into a mainstream school.

Кадетское образование в России става елитно

– В нашей школе каждый ребенок учится по индивидуальному плану, который составляется с учетом его возможностей, психологических и физиологических особенностей. Занятия проходят по-разному: один на один с учителем, в классах, в группах по 5-10 человек. Стараемся активно использовать информационные технологии. У нас есть два компьютерных класса, причем один предназначен для обучения игры в шахматы на основе специального программного обеспечения и методических разработок: «Школа Фишера», «Шахматная школа для шахматистов II-IV разрядов», «Chessmaster 9000».

Може би трябва отделна тема за шахматът в образованието, или тази да е обобщена: Логически игри в образованието. Иначе за шахмат се е писало и пише много.

Като президент на Калмикия искам да информирам присъстващите тук треньори и родители на млади шахматисти, че преди 12 години в училищата на нашата република ние въведохме занятията с шахмат и сега всички деца ги играят. Някои станаха майстори, гросмайстори, европейски и световни шампиони. Най-важното е, че децата станаха по-дисциплинирани и по-ученолюбиви. В училищата, където добре се преподава шахмат, успеваемостта по предмети се е покачила 2-3 пъти. Нашите калмицки деца станаха победители на много международни ученически олимпиади по математика, биология, физика, литература и др. науки. Това показва, че шахматът действително разкрива интелектуалните способности на нашите деца.

И аз подкрепям идеята на Кирсан Илюмжинов. Защо ли не вземат пример от него нашите управляващи, вместо да правят поредната "реформа" в образованието, а след това да констатират колко погрешна е била .
